swelling, pain and discomfort.
What does PIPs® stand for?
PIPs® stands for perineal ice panties. Perineal or perineum is a medical term used to describe the vaginal area. PIPs® panty is a patented undergarment which provides cooling treatment to reduce swelling and discomfort after delivery or vulvar surgery.
Can I use PIPs® panty when I am bleeding after my delivery?
Yes. PIPs® panty has a unique patented design – the boy short crotch has a sewn in pouch with a center opening that holds a PIPs® ice bag. The PIPs® ice bag itself also has a center opening that lines up with the pouch opening. This was done to make PIPs® panty anatomically correct – the opening in the pouch and the PIPs® ice bag will allow any blood from the vagina to flow through these center channels to the sanitary napkin beneath the pouch. The pouch material itself is water repellent and can be wiped down with a damp cloth or paper towel when soiled.
How soon after delivery can I use PIPs® panty?
Immediately after. Once your placenta (or afterbirth) is delivered and any tears you may have gotten from delivering your baby are repaired, you can put PIPs® panty on. The sooner you apply cooling treatment to the area, the sooner the swelling and discomfort will start to get better.
How soon after vulvar surgery can I use my PIPs® panty
As soon as your surgeon or healthcare provider advises, but usually within 24 hours of surgery.
I’m not sure which size PIPs® panty I will need. How do I decide?
The PIPs® panty sizes show the corresponding U.S. women’s pants size. That’s a good place to start. Remember that after birth, many women have a bloated belly and you may need a larger size. PIPs® panty has some give because it was made to stretch. That’s why each size has a range – XS/S, M/L and XL/2X. If you are on the fence, order the next size up. You want to be comfortable after you deliver or have vulvar surgery and will not want to wear a panty that digs into your waist, thighs or vaginal area.
What do I put in the pouch first - the sanitary napkin or the PIPS® ice bag?
It’s recommended to first place the sanitary napkin in the pouch. Then place the PIPs® ice bag in the pouch in front of the sanitary napkin. Make sure the center opening of the PIPs® ice bag lines up with the center opening in the pouch. You should still be able to see the sanitary napkin through the center opening of the pouch behind the PIPs® ice bag.
How do I fill the PIPs® ice bag with ice?
Open the re-sealable closure at the top of the PIPs® ice bag. Fill it with ice up to the fill line and do not go above the fill line. Reseal the PIPs® ice bag.
How do I insert the PIPs® ice bag filled with ice into the pouch?
Take the filled and sealed PIPs® ice bag and insert it into the pouch so the re-sealable closure is sticking out of the opening of the pouch near your waist. (In other words, if you inserted the PIPs® ice bag so that the re-sealable closure is pointing toward your bum, you have it in the pouch the wrong way).
Can I use the PIPs® ice bag filled with ice in my own underwear?
No. The PIPs® ice bag when filled with ice will be too cold to be placed directly against your skin and vaginal area. You should never use the PIPs® ice bag in this way. The PIPs® ice bag is only meant to be used in the pouch in your PIPs® panty. If at any time you think your PIPs® panty is uncomfortably cold, remove it immediately. You can always replace it later if you want to.
Can I re-use PIPs® panty?
Yes, you can if you want to. PIPs® panty is made from polyester and spandex. You can safely hand wash or machine wash your PIPs® panty on a cold water gentle cycle and low heat tumble dry or hang to dry. After you are done using your PIPs®, panty you can wash it, store it away for use at a later time.
Can I re-use the PIPs® ice bag?
Yes. You can re-use the PIPs® ice bags as well. Wash the outside with soap and water and dry it well. Dry the inside of the bag with a paper towel. You can store the bags away for use at a later time.
Are the PIPs® ice bags recyclable?
Yes. The PIPs® ice bags are recyclable but they have to be brought to a plastic bag drop off. If you chose to recycle the PIPs® ice bags, please wash the outside of the bag off well with soap and water, just as you would clean any container you drop off to recycle.
If I chose to recycle the PIPs® ice bags, where do I bring them?

Do I need to use a certain type of sanitary napkin with my PIPs® panty?
No. Any sanitary napkin will work with your PIPs® panty, including the ones supplied by hospital Maternity Units. If you are using a napkin with a self adhesive sticky on the bottom, just leave the paper over the self adhesive so it will be easier to place the napkin into the pouch.
What type of ice works best with my PIPs® panty – ice cubes, ice chips or crushed ice?
You can use any of those. The beauty of the PIPs® panty design is that all US hospital Labor and Delivery, Maternity and Surgical Units have ice machines. So it’s free and easy to get ice to use in your PIPs® panty. The package you will receive has 2 PIPs® ice bags. So, while one is in use, you can get ice to fill up the next bag when it’s ready to be changed. You don’t have to worry about being able to store the PIPs® ice bag in a freezer, which most hospitals do not provide in patient rooms. The same thing applies if you are using PIPs® panty at home.
PIPs® panty is designed only to be used with conventional frozen water ice. To avoid injury, DO NOT USE DRY ICE in your PIPs® ice bag.
Why is there a “fill line” on the PIPs® ice bag?
The fill line is there to decrease the chance of spillage from the re-sealable closure at the top of the PIPs® ice bag. As the ice melts, with the pressure of your body against the pouch holding the PIPs® ice bag, the water from the melted ice will be driven up towards the re-sealable closure. Keeping the PIPs® ice bag filled only up to the fill line will help prevent seepage of ice water through the seal at the top of the bag, as will changing the ice before it completely melts.
How often do I have to change the ice in the PIPs® ice bag?
It all depends on how quickly the ice melts. A good estimate may be every 1 ½ hours. Don’t let the ice completely melt, because you will get seepage of cold water through the re-sealable closure at the top of the ice bag.
ONLY USE THE PIPs® ICE BAG IN THE POUCH OF YOUR PIPs® PANTY.
DO NOT PLACE A FILLED PIPs® ICE BAG DIRECTLY AGAINST YOUR SKIN OR VAGINAL AREA.
How long do I need to wear my PIPs® panty?
This will vary with every woman. Many women may need cooling to their vaginal area, either continuously or intermittently, for anywhere from 24-48 hours or longer. Some women may need wear PIPS intermittently for the first several days after vaginal delivery or vulvar surgery. It all depends on how swollen and sore they are.
Does my PIPs® panty need to be worn continuously for 24-48 hours?
Not necessarily. If the ice pack feels too cold, you can temporarily remove your PIPs® panty and put it on again later if you wish to. Even wearing your PIPs® panty for a short time will provide some benefit of the cooling effect. Once the swelling and discomfort has resolved, you will not need to continue to wear your PIPs® panty.
When I re-use my PIPs® panty in the future, but want to purchase more PIPs® ice bags, where can I get them?
You can purchase the components of the package separately on this website. Don't forget, just like your PIPs® panty, you can re-use your PIPs® ice bags!
